In Bless Me Ultima we see that Tony is troubled by religion. Do you think that this insecurity in his faith may be a coming of age process in a different way? "The golden carp' [he]said to himself'anew god?" to Antonio, this is world shaking. He has been told all his life he is to become a priest, that means believing in God. However if he is questioning his faith, can he become a priest? is he losing his innocence.
Go to the poem and see what you think.

Antonio wouldn’t become a successful priest if he was questioning his Catholic faith. His questions would bother his reputation as a priest because he would be in a completely different conversation with God. In the mist of finding an answer, he wouldn’t be able to obtain certain answers from regular citizens because his questions would be challenging his Catholic faith, thus ruining his good image as a Luna priest. When he would ask God for an answer, God wouldn’t share his secrets because he is a greedy God. He would lose his innocence because not finding the answer for any of his questions would leave himself reckless in search of the answer on his own path without anyone’s help or support.

I think that he was just tempted by his friends to "deny" if you will his faith. Because he was the only one to be serious about his "religion" and the other young boys didn't take it seriously he didn't want to feel as if he was a "loner."

ReplyDeleteThe loss of innocence in life is an inevitable process. Losing one’s innocence comes merely by growing up. The philosophy of the loss of one’s innocence is a definite theme in the book Bless Me, Ultima. This theme is displayed throughout the entire story and plot of the novel. There is loss of innocence all around the main character, Tony, with his brothers and the people he meets. Tony also loses a great deal of his own innocence to the harsh realities of the world which marks his transition from a boy to a man.
Antonio’s transition from innocence to experience is highlighted through specific trials over the course of the novel. The remainder of Antonio’s innocence is lost with the accidental drowning of Florence.
When Antonio loses his inncence he gains the valuable elements that are viable to a priest.
I don't believe it is possible for Antonio to become a good priest if he doesn't believe fully in what he preaches about which is God. He often questions God and his descision making. We can see that Antonio starts to believe more in the golden carp than God sometimes. This "miraculous thing, the appearance of a pagan god" has made Antonio question God, in the catholic faith, even more (Anaya 114). I also think he is losing his innocence by learning of more gods like the golden carp and experiencing death.

ReplyDeleteAntonio was always told that he was to become a priest. Yet still unsure about his religion and staying faithful to it, i think that he wouldnt become a good priest due to the fact that he is still undecided about what to believe. Even when he tries and pray to God he seems as though that his prayers are still not answered. "[He] asked God to answer [his] questions, but the only sound was [...] the wind" (Anaya 196).
